Dennis Widmyer and Kevin Kolsch, directors of Starry Eyes, which we screened in 2014, are in talks to carry through Mama 2, sequel of the film by Andy Muschietti, winner of 2009 MolinsHorror Short Film Contest and member of the Festival’s 2010 Jury.
Universal Pictures finally decided to go for a second part of the movie Mama three years after it was premiered on cinemas on 2013. At that time Universal’s President of International Productions already talked about turning the film into a franchise. It is not surprising as Mama made 145 millions of dollars with a budget of only 15 millions.
The announcement hits home for us as Mama was directed by Andy Muschietti and is based on a short film by himself that we had the pleasure to screen at our Festival on 2009. Also entitled Mamá and filmed on 2008, it won the “angoixa” Audience Award and the Best Short Film Award at Molins Horror Film Festival 2009. Even lately we had Andy with us as member of the Jury at the MolinsHorror 2010 edition.
Furthermore, today has transcended via The Hollywood Reporter (THR) that Universal is in talks with Dennis Widmyer and Kevin Kolsch to rewrite and direct this sequel. From the Molins Horror Film Festival we are also delighted because Widmyer and Kolsch directed the movie Starry Eyes, which was at 2014 MolinsHorror edition and awarded with an Special Mention to Interpretation for the work of Alexandra Essoe.
THR informs that Andy Muschietti will not be in charge of Mama 2 so he can focus on the new adaptation of IT for the big screen. Based Stephen King’s novel and with a screenplay by Chase Palmer, it will be produced KatzSmith Productions, Lin Pictures and Vertigo Entertainment.
Best wishes from us to Andy, Dennis and Kevin.
